2015 BLM-WSR Contest

DEADLINE EXTENDED to September 25, 2015!

Share some super fun, exciting, breathtaking, or simply silly river moments on a Wild and Scenic Rivers managed by the Bureau of Land Management, and you may become eligible to win a GoProHero4Silver, or $100 cash for yourself  and a river charity of your choice! 

We're looking for striking photographs and videos that capture the unique qualities of federal Wild and Scenic Rivers that flow through lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). These are rivers with special protected status as ‘wild’, ‘scenic’ or ‘recreational’ due to their “outstandingly remarkable” natural or cultural values and are protected from the building of new dams, roads and other development. Have fun, share your river trip giggles, early mornings, first descents and riverside discoveries with friends and family on BLM Wild and Scenic Rivers.

Subject Categories

Submit photos and videos in one of three categories: YouthScenic Landscapes, or Recreation (mouse over the examples below to see their category).

Media Categories 

First, second and third place will be awarded in each of three media categories:

  • Still photos
  • Videos up to six (6) seconds
  • Video up to three (3) minutes 

Individuals may submit up to three photos and three videos.

Honorable Mention

Honorable mention will be awarded by judges based on the quality of the submissions in each category. Photos and videos not taken on BLM rivers may be considered for Honorable Mention awards.

Grand Prize

One (1) Grand Prize Winner – will be determined by a vote among finalists a poll offered through the RMS Facebook page!
A GoPro®Hero4 Sliver Camera ~ OR ~  $100 in cash plus $100 donated in your name to a river charity of your choice.

Contest Tips and Submission Details

Tips to help you prepare your submission

  • If you include other people in your submission, you are responsible for obtaining the necessary releases from the individuals depicted, and must be able to provide copies of those releases to the River Management Society upon request. Entrants must not submit images that involve infringe on the rights of another photographer or person (see the contest waiver). 
  • Your submission should accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared. Images that have been digitally altered beyond standard optimization (removal of dust, cropping, reasonable adjustments to exposure, color and contrast, etc.) will be disqualified. Multiple exposures that have been combined to produce a single "High Dynamic Range" image are acceptable. Images that do not meet these requirements may or may not be judged at the judging panel's sole discretion.

Please clearly label all submissions to assist judges in determining eligibility.

All submissions will be credited with the label "Photo/Video by [Person's Name]." RMS has final approval of any language that appears on its website with any of the photos and will not promote or endorse third-party products or services.

YOUR ELIGIBILITY:  You must ‘like’ the River Management Society Facebook page to be eligible.  This contest  is open to ALL photographers and videographers 18 years of age or older, as long as the laws of their jurisdiction allow participation. The only exceptions are River Management Society (RMS) employees, board members, and photographers currently paid by RMS and their immediate family members: these individuals are not eligible.

YOUR RIGHTS:  By entering the WSR Contest, you grant to River Management Society (i) a nonexclusive, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free license to reproduce, distribute, publicly display and publicly perform the photographs you submit, and (ii) the right to use your name, city, state and country of residence in promotions and other publications. You also retain all rights to any photograph or video you submit including ownership, if applicable.

HOW TO ENTER PHOTOS:  Each person can enter up to three (3) photos, which must be submitted electronically via flickr™. To enter your photo(s) via flickr:

1) Log in to www.flickr.com with a Yahoo!® or Google® ID. If you do not have an account, you can sign-up for free at www.flickr.com.
2) Join the Wild and Scenic Rivers Photo/Video Contest Group

on Flickr™, join by clicking "Join this Group” on the group's Flickr homepage.
3) Upload your images as directed.
4) Browse to the image you wish to submit for the WSR Contest, and use the "Send to Group" function to add your images to the River Management Society Image Contest photo pool.
5) Label your photo submission with a caption and description that include:

  • The subject of the image (what's going on?)

  • The river and location (for example: launch site name, town, mile marker) where the video was taken

  • A description of the trip, circumstances, etc. that may be helpful for judges

  • Bonus points: identify the river as Wild, Scenic or Recreational according to their designation at rivers.gov.

6) Include RMS2015 in your photo tags.
7) Email RMS to [email protected] with a subject that says “WSR Contest - Photo”.  Tell us your name, current email and phone number so that RMS can contact you if you are a winner! If you forget to include the information in 5) above, just include those items your email message.

If you do not complete all of these steps, your photo may not be eligible for consideration in the WSR Contest.

HOW TO ENTER VIDEOS:  Individuals can enter up to three videos total, regardless of length. Videos will be accepted in two categories: 

  • Six (6) seconds and 

  • Longer, any length up to three (3) minutes in length: the maximum size video file Flickr accepts is 3 minutes and 1 GB

High definition (HD) Video will be given preference, but will not be the sole determinant of quality by the judging panel.

1) Upload your video to Flickr.
2) Label your video with a caption and description that include:

  • The subject of the image

  • The river and location (for example: launch site name, town, mile marker) where the video was taken

  • A description of the trip, circumstances, etc. that may be helpful for judges

3) Include RMS2015 in your video tags.
4) Email RMS to [email protected] with the Subject: “WSR Contest – Video” with a link to your video, your name, email, postal / physical mailing address, and phone number so that RMS can contact you if you are a winner and if you are an award winner, an address for mailing your prize! If you forget to include the information in 2) above, include it in this email message.

If you do not complete all of these steps, your video may not be eligible for consideration in the WSR Contest.

If you have trouble uploading your video, please consult with technical support for that site. The River Management Society is not responsible for difficulty you encounter while trying to upload a video.

PHOTO SUITABILITY, JUDGING: To ensure eligibility for the WSR Contest, photo entries must be available in a press quality high-resolution version upon request, no less than 2500 pixels on the long side. Video entries must each be no longer than 3 minutes in length and must be posted so they are available to download. Entries that do not meet these requirements will not be eligible to win the WSR Contest.

Entries must be submitted electronically, though they may originate as digital files, digital prints, color transparencies, color prints, or black and white prints.

Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted may be entered as long as you still maintain the right to grant us a license (see "Your Rights" above). You must be able to disclose when and where the photo appeared previously to the River Management Society upon request.

Images and videos will be judged according to their originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact, and artistic merit, and the degree to which they illustrate the outstandingly remarkable values of the Wild, Scenic or Recreational River on which the image(s) are created. The judges are a panel of professionals who are both familiar with photography and the Wild and Scenic Rivers system:

  • Mr. Robert Wick - Wilderness Specialist, National Conservation Lands, Bureau of Land Management, Washington, DC
  • Mr. Joshua Hammari - Graphic Design, Interpretation,Education, Volunteers, Bureau of Land Management, California
  • Ms. Helen Clough - President, Board of Directors, River Management Society
  • Ms. Risa Shimoda - Executive Director, River Management Society

The River Management Society shall determine winner eligibility in its sole and absolute discretion. All decisions made by the judges are final.

DEADLINES:  Deadline for submitting entries is 11:59 pm Alaska Daylight Savings Time on September 25, 2015.

WINNERS: The judging panel will select the following by October 1, 2015 and will notify winners by October 15, 2015. The River Management Society reserves the right to adjust any deadline(s) as the result of causes beyond its immediate control.

Winners will be announced in the Fall, 2015 RMS Journal and will appear on both the RMS website www.river-management.org and the Wild and Scenic Rivers website, www.rivers.gov for at least one month during the October-December, 2015 time period.
