< /span>
In addition to government agencies, academics, commercial operators, and businesses, there are a number of RMS members who work in no nprofit river-serving organizations. Board growth, shifting funder prioriti es, engagement of constituents, few or no staff are all common issues faced by nonprofit leaders. The purpose of this River Management Roundtable is t o convene river professionals in the nonprofit sector to discuss the unique needs and challenges of running nonprofit organizations in today's world. The hope is to convene nonprofit representatives to have a moderated dialog ue with interested audience members regarding common issues facing nonprofi ts and potential solutions to create more sustainable organizations.
Kristina Rylands is a lifetim e RMS member and is the president of the Pacific Chapter. As a kid growing up in Southern California, she daydreamed that a river ran through her back yard and knew it was all over as a 10-year-old when she first set foot in t he Tuolumne River in Yosemite National Park. She has lived in the Yosemite region for nearly 30 years, spending 13 years as an NPS wild and scenic riv er planner on both the Merced River Plan (including multiple rounds of liti gation) and Tuolumne River Plan (0 litigation!). In addition, she served as an NPS representative on the Interagency Wild & Scenic Rivers Coordina ting Council. Eleven years ago she left the NPS (and most river work) to fo llow her passion for inspiring the next generation of stewards as the Yosem ite Regional Director for NatureBridge, a nonprofit education partner of th e NPS. Today she works as a freelance project manager (and is the board vic e chair) in support of the Upper Merced River Watershed Council just outsid e of Yosemite National Park. You'll find her spending as much time as she c an on a river, especially in her beloved IK named Bunny. |
