Whitewater Park Features, Benefits and Tradeoffs

At the intersection of hydraulic engineering and outdoor advocacy, a new generation of whitewater parks is proving that we can both support traditional agricultural needs while providing new, tailored recreational opportunities and further, training venues for athletes and swiftwater rescue technicians. By integrating precision flow distribution technology, wave technicians are transforming traditional irrigation infrastructure into dynamic recreational hubs while maintaining a rigorous commitment to public safety. They are not just moving water; they are learning to utilize technology once limited to “open and close” water releases to maximize river flow potential for many stakeholders in their respective communities. Join us to learn from experts in whitewater park design and operations about how these systems work, the benefits they offer, and the tradeoffs communities must consider when designing and managing whitewater parks.

Speakers

 Paul Primus

Paul Primus is the Lead Wave Technician at the Boise Whitewater Park. After 13 years of maintaining the park's river waves and irrigation deliveries, he learned the incredible potential of adjustable gates in the river. He is widely recognized as one the country's leading experts in river park operations playing a significant role in adding short board surfing to the whitewater park. You can learn more about Paul in his TEDx talk called "Surfing the Non-Coast" or his recent appearance on "Story Story Night" on YouTube.

 Ryan Richard

Ryan Richard turned a passion for river surfing into a career. Over the past 12 years, he has focused on bringing the sport to communities around the world. He has operated adjustable whitewater parks in Boise, ID and Bend, OR, and has also provided design and operations consultation for many waves around the world. He is a strong believer in the array of benefits that emerge from properly designed and high functioning in-stream adjustable whitewater parks. He has extensive experience with the positive impacts to community, culture, and environment.

Registration

On the second Tuesday of the month, the River Management Society hosts River Management Roundtables, facilitated virtual discussions with professional river and water trails managers. These peer-to-peer conversations provide an open forum to ask questions, share solutions, and build camaraderie. There is no fee or membership requirement to attend, though registration is required. Discussions are recorded and shared with registrants.
