The State of Adaptive Paddling: a Veteran Equipment Designer’s Perspective

River Management Roundtable
Sep. 13 | 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. ET
Watch the Recording

Paddling offers lifelong opportunities for fun and fitness by all regardless of ability. Poor or unskilled management can invite headaches, and worse. To welcome the public and support individuals' use, river and park managers should take time to learn, share and train staff to know a safe system when they see one, and if it is not, what they can do to lower risk and elevate enjoyment. These factors become more important when welcoming differently-abled paddlers. Learn about adaptive paddling needs that can be accommodated with smart equipment modifications and the basic access elements (that are NOT ADA requirements) that managers should plan to offer or improve. From specially-tailored outfitting to launch site assistance devices and docks positioned to serve the disabled, we will touch on topics that are important to waterside access managers.

Presenter

Kevin Carr

In 2004, Kevin Carr began a project to make paddling accessible to all, and the project produced the Universal Paddling Seat. Since then, Creating Ability has developed and provided fully outfitted kayaks and adaptations to enable people of all abilities to participate in the sport of adaptive kayaking. He volunteers at various events and venues around the country in support of persons with disabilities and their families. He has provided on-site support, education, and outfitting to enhance the lives of the participants, enabling them to experience the freedom and independence paddling can bring to their world.

About RMS River Management Roundtables

Each month, the River Management Society hosts virtual conversations with professional river, greenway, and water trails leaders, planners, and managers whose community, region, state and federal river will benefit from the experiences of peer-to-peer sharing. Our goal is to facilitate an open forum to support your work managing rivers. We work together to tackle common issues by asking questions, sharing solutions and building comradery.
