Bank Stabilization on Wild and Scenic Rivers Solved

Virtual Webinar with the River Training Center

Bank stabilization projects on Wild and Scenic Rivers (WSR) are quite challenging and almost always require a Section 7 determination by a WSR manager. This webinar is intended to give property owners and WSR managers a better understanding of fluvial geomorphology (i.e., river dynamics) and bank erosion processes that will help in deciding if bank stabilization is needed at a given site. For situations when stabilization is required to protect critical infrastructure or WSR values, the webinar will also outline methods for selecting stabilization techniques that are effective and most consistent with WSR values. Participants will be introduced to new guidance materials developed specifically for WSR managers (but useful to others as well) that detail basic concepts in fluvial geomorphology, explain bank stabilization measures, and provide resources to assist in better understanding and contextualizing erosion problems in their local watersheds.

Presenter

John Field Dr. John Field, President and founder of Field Geology Services, trains teachers and government agency personnel on techniques for assessing the stability and habitat conditions of rivers and streams.  Dr. Field has 20 years of consulting experience that has included geomorphic assessments on over 1,000 miles of rivers and streams in 15 states and 11 other countries worldwide to identify the causes for riverine problems such as erosion, flooding, elevated sediment/nutrient loading, and habitat degradation. The assessment results have informed the design and implementation of over 40 miles of bank stabilization and stream restoration projects.

About RMS River Management Roundtables

Each month, the River Management Society hosts virtual conversations with professional river, greenway, and water trails leaders, planners, and managers whose community, region, state and federal river will benefit from the experiences of peer-to-peer sharing. Our goal is to facilitate an open forum to support your work managing rivers. We work together to tackle common issues by asking questions, sharing solutions and building comradery.
