RMS Announces 2025 River Studies and Leadership Certificate Recipients

Graduates begin careers in water quality, climate resilience, recreation, and environmental education

The River Management Society (RMS) proudly announces the 2025 recipients of the River Studies and Leadership Certificate (RSLC), a distinctive academic achievement made possible through a partnership with 14 colleges and universities across the United States. This year, 16 students have completed a rigorous combination of interdisciplinary coursework and hands-on field experience in river science, policy, conservation, education, and recreation—equipping them with the skills and insight needed to pursue careers in the study, management and protection of our rivers.

“These graduates represent the next generation of river stewards and leaders,” says Risa Shimoda, RMS Executive Director. “At a time when experienced river professionals are retiring and our waterways face increasing pressure from climate change and human use, the fresh energy, knowledge, and passion these students bring is essential.”

Certificate recipients at the University of Northern Colorado University and West Virginia University are the first at their institutions to ever receive this certificate.

Several have already begun river-related careers in fields like water quality monitoring, climate resilience, recreation, and environmental education.

“Being part of the RSLC program was an incredible experience,” says Briana Allman. “I loved working closely with river professionals, gaining hands-on insight into watershed management and conservation. Presenting my research at the RMS Symposium was a highlight, allowing me to share my work with experts and engage in meaningful discussions. This program deepened my passion for sustainable river stewardship, and I’m grateful for the connections and knowledge I gained along the way."
