STRATEGIC AND ANNUAL PLANS

Introduction

The River Management Society (Society) Strategic Plan - 2006-2010 establishes a framework for how the Society will fulfill its mission during the next five years. The Strategic Plan provides a foundation on which annual work plans and budgets are built. In sum, these three documents define how the Society's human and financial resources are allocated to fulfill its mission. The 2006-2010 planning cycle marks the third time the Society has completed a strategic planning process.

The Strategic Plan articulates the mission of the Society and identifies long-range goals and objectives consistent with fulfilling the mission. Annual work plans are tied to the Strategic Plan and identify specific actions and activities to be accomplished under four major goals. Annual budgets specify how financial resources are allocated to meet base operating expenses and to accomplish the specific action items identified in the yearly work plans.

History

A strategic plan was first drafted for the 1994-1999 time period. A second plan was drafted by the Society at the 2000 RMS Board of Directors meeting. Attendees included the national officers, chapter presidents, ex-officio members, and the Program Director. The second strategic plan was adopted for the 2001-2005 planning cycle. Annual work plans and budgets have been completed each year since 2001, and linked expenditures to work plan actions. At the close of each year the RMS Board evaluates the yearly work plan to identify which actions were accomplished and which were not. A yearly report is then posted on the RMS website.
