INTERAGENCY RIVER MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP

Every other year, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Forest Service (FS), National Park Service (NPS) and Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) take turns hosting an Interagency River Management Workshop. The Forest Service hosted the 2007 workshop in Missoula, MT and the 2009 workshop is being hosted by the National Park Service.

These workshops are open to everyone (not just agency personnel) and are designed to be interactive and address timely river management topics. They also provide great networking, problem-solving and training opportunities for those involved with rivers. The River Management Society is a proud co-sponsor of the Interagency Workshops.

2009 Interagency River Management Workshop

Today's Rivers, Tomorrow's Stewards

March 10-12, 2009 ~ Yosemite National Park, CA ~Yosemite Lodge at the Falls

WELCOME
Yosemite National Park is a place of ongoing transformation. But over the millennia, the rivers have remained one constant in the park’s story of change. Another constant has been the caring of people for this special place—from its American Indian residents for over 6,000 years to champions, like John Muir, of wild places.

In keeping with the spirit of this dynamic place and those stewards who have come before, join river professionals from around the country for three days of exploration and collaboration as we look at river management today, and the future protection of our nation’s rivers tomorrow—Today’s Rivers, Tomorrow’s Stewards.

REGISTRATION
A fee of $75 includes all workshop sessions, entrance into Yosemite National Park, Wednesday field trip and lunch, Thursday night closing dinner with entertainment.

PURPOSE AND PROGRAM
The purpose of the 2009 Interagency River Management Workshop is to bring together river professionals from around the country to discuss issues and share successes and challenges. While this is an interagency workshop—with federal, state, and local agencies invited to participate—non-governmental organizations, academic institutions, and interested citizens are most welcome. The goal is to create an interactive and invigorating professional growth opportunity, within the backdrop of one of the nation’s most beloved national parks.

There will be two days devoted to sessions and presentations, as well as a field trip day to explore Yosemite and discuss river issues with colleagues. Workshop offerings will include a mixture of presentations, hands-on learning, and networking opportunities. Some of our sessions may involve "speed presentations" where folks can get a flavor of a particular issue, and then follow-up with those of greatest interest. We will also be asking participants to come prepared to share something about their particular river, whether it's a success story, a case study, or a challenge in need of a solution. On the final day of the workshop, we will hold a Confluence Clinic where people may share ideas, ask questions, and get answers from colleagues.

Today’s Rivers, Tomorrow’s Stewards
will focus on four tracks:

I. Education and Interpretation
II. Wild and Scenic Training Opportunities
III. River Health and Restoration
IV. User Capacity and Visitor Use Management
