Goal

Increased understanding of the protection requirements associated with managing a designated wild and scenic river (WSR) and how to conduct WSR study in forest planning.

Training Objectives

The goal of this 16-hour course is to increase participants’ understanding of the protection requirements associated with managing a designated wild and scenic river (WSR) and how to conduct WSR study in forest planning. Specifically, the course will increase participants’ knowledge in:

  • The protection requirements of the Act 
  • Evaluating water resources projects subject to review under Section 7(a) 
  • The WSR study process with focus on reviewing eligibility/classification during forest plan revision

Who would benefit from participating in this training?

  • Forest Service staff and leadership with responsibility to manage a WSR
  • Other key resource staff whose programs contribute to monitoring and protection of values (e.g., fisheries, hydrology, archaeology), or who propose or implement projects within WSR corridors
  • Agency partners and other agency staff

Cost and Registration

  • There is no charge for this training.
  • The workshop is open to USFS staff/line first and to others if slots are available.
  • Registration is anticipated to begin July 20, 2015.

As pre-work, we suggest that you review several technical reports prepared by the Interagency Wild and Scenic Rivers Coordinating Council (IWSRCC). If you are not already familiar with the IWSRCC, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with their website, http://www.rivers.gov/.

We encourage you to find a few minutes to take the 10-question pre-test. The test is for your information only and provided to help you focus your time with pre-work materials. An answer key is provided so you may score your effort. We will do a quick show of hands at the session to see how you and other participants fared.
