Up a river ... with your camera! A celebration of Wild and Scenic Rivers Winners


The River Management Society is proud to announce this year's photo/video contest winners, artists who submitted striking digital images that capture the unique qualities of national Wild, Scenic or Recreational rivers or their “outstandingly remarkable” naturalor cultural values. Winning images are posted on the RMS Facebook page and www.rivers.govthe home website for our nation's Wild and Scenic Rivers. Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all who submitted photos and videos, particularly River Management Society members!

The winning photograph was shot on the Snake River by Peter Jacobson, Drescher, Pennsylvania. Peter has received a GoPro Hero3 Black camera.  Congratulations!

Just a little ways down from Katie's Landing on the Wekiva River is this quite little dock. It's almost at the end of civilization. The canopy of trees here makes this area rich with vegetation.

WHAT TO ENTERAllagash River, Maine
Capture grand panoramas or up-close images of people, wildlife and vegetation alongside, on or in a river.  Submit images that showcase your river experiences, whether relaxing on the bank, swimming, paddling, fishing or hiking.  Images or video can be serious, or seriously funny: all they need to do is illustrate how special these rivers for our national legacy, protected for our children’s children.


Please read the following rules, terms and conditions as you prepare your submission.

Tips to help you prepare your submission:

  • If you include other people in your submission, you are responsible for obtaining the necessary releases from the individuals depicted, and must provide copies of those releases to the River Management Society upon request. Entrants must not 
  • submit images that involve infringe on the rights of another photographer or person. Any easily recognizable person in a submitted photo or video must give the photographer or videographer approval for use of any / all of the content submitted. 
  • See 'Legal Conditions' below, and you may use the attached form to provide upon request from the contest judges.
  • Your submission should accurately reflect the subject matter and the scene as it appeared. Images that have been digitally altered beyond standard optimization (removal of dust, cropping, reasonable adjustments to exposure, color and contrast,        etc.) will be disqualified. Multiple exposures that have been combined to produce a single "High Dynamic Range" image are acceptable. Images that do not meet these requirements may or may not be judged at the judging panel's sole discretion.


Please clearly label all submissions to assist judges in determining eligibility.

All submissions will be credited with the label "Photo/Video by [Person's Name]." RMS has final approval of any language that appears on its website with any of the photos and will not promote or endorse third-party products or services.

The Up a river…with your camera! A celebration of Wild and Scenic Rivers (the "WSR Contest") is open to ALL photographers and videographers 18 years of age or older, as long as the laws of their jurisdiction allow participation.  The only exceptions are River Management Society (RMS) employees, board members, and photographers currently paid by RMS and their immediate family members: these individuals are not eligible.
 

Required: You must ‘like’ the River Management Society Facebook page to be eligible. This is stated on the flickr site as a condition of joining the Wild and Scenic Photo/Video Contest Group.

Suggested, not required: 'Share' the RMS page and the story of Wild and Scenic Rivers with like-minded Facebook friends!  Sharing will have no effect on the judges’ decisions.

YOUR RIGHTS
You will retain all rights to any photograph or video you submit — including ownership if applicable — other than those rights licensed in the next sentence.  By entering the WSR Contest, you hereby grant to River Management Society (i) a nonexclusive, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free license to reproduce, distribute, publicly display and publicly perform each photo or video you submit, in whole or in part and (ii) the right to use your name, city, state and country of residence in promotions and other publications.

HOW TO ENTER PHOTOS AND VIDEOS

You can enter up to three (3) photos and three (3) videos, which must be submitted electronically via flickr™.  To enter:

1) Log in to www.flickr.com with a Yahoo!® or Google® ID. If you do not have an account, you can sign-up for free at www.flickr.com.

2) Join the Wild and Scenic Rivers Photo/Video Contest Group on Flickr™ by clicking "Join this Group" on the group's flickr homepage

3) Upload your images or videos as directed. 

4) Label your photo submission with a caption and description that include:

  • The subject of the image
  • The river and location (for example: launch site name, town, mile marker) where the video was taken
  • A description of the trip, circumstances, etc. that may be helpful for judges
  • Optional: identify the river as Wild, Scenic or Recreational according to their designation at rivers.gov.

5) Include RMS 2013, River Management Society, RMS, and Wild and Scenic Rivers in your photo or video tags
6) Send RMS a message to rivers@river-management.org with a subject that says “WSR Contest – Photo” with your name, current email and phone number and a link to or name of your photo / video so RMS can contact you if you are a winner!  .

If you do not complete all of these steps, your photo will not be eligible for consideration in the WSR Contest. 

If you have trouble using Flickr™, please consult their online help files. The River Management Society is not responsible for troubles you encounter while trying to upload a photo or video on Flickr.  Note: Flickr™ and Yahoo!® are trademarks of Yahoo, Inc.

ELIGIBILITY AND JUDGING

To ensure eligibility for the WSR Contest, photo entries must be available in a press quality high-resolution version upon request, no less than 2500 pixels on the long side.  Video entries must be 90 seconds in length, or shorter, and must be posted so they are available to download. High definition (HD) video will be given preference, but will not be the sole determinant of quality by the judging panel.Entries that do not meet these requirements will not be eligible to win the contest. 

Entries must be submitted electronically and may originate in any format including digital files, digital prints, color transparencies, color prints, or black and white prints.

Previously published material for which non-exclusive rights were granted may be entered as long as you still maintain the right to grant us a license (see "Your Rights" above). You must be able to disclose when and where the photo appeared previously to the River Management Society upon request.

Images and videos will be judged according to their originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact, and artistic merit, and the degree to which they illustrate the outstandingly remarkable values of the Wild, Scenic or Recreational River on which the image(s) are created. The judging panel consists of professionals who are both familiar with photography / video and the Wild and Scenic Rivers system.

The River Management Society shall determine winner eligibility in its sole and absolute discretion. All decisions made by the judges are final.

DEADLINES

Entries must be submitted by 12:00 pm Eastern Daylight Savings Time,  July 15, 2013.  Entries can be uploaded starting 12:01 am Eastern Standard Time on March 27, 2013. Entrants may be asked to submit a paragraph about the story behind the photo anytime on or after July 31, 2013.

WINNERS

The judging panel will select the following by August 1, 2013:

  • One (1) Grand Prize Photo Winner
  • Up to five (5) Honorable Mention photo winners
  • One (1) Grand Prize Video Winner
  • Up to five (5) Honorable Mention video winners

The photo first place winner and the video first place winner will each receive a one-year Professional level membership with River Management Society, $100 cash and a gift of $100 made in his/her name to the river conservation charity 501( c ) 3 of his / her choice. The River Management Society reserves the right to adjust any deadline(s) as the result of causes beyond its immediate control.

Winners will be announced in the Fall, 2013 RMS Journal and will appear on both the RMS website www.river-management.org and the Wild and Scenic Rivers website, www.rivers.gov for at least one month during the October-December, 2013 time period.

LEGAL CONDITIONS

By entering this contest participants agree to indemnify, defend and hold harmless the River Management Society, its affiliates, directors, officers, employees, attorneys, sponsors and representatives from any and all third party liability for any injuries, loss, claim, action, demand or damage of any kind arising from or in connection with the competition (collectively, "Losses"), including without limitation any third party claim for copyright infringement or a violation of an individual’s right to privacy and/or publicity right. The WSR Contest is void where prohibited by law.

Each participant in the WSR Contest (each a "Participant") is responsible for ensuring that he or she has the right to submit photography or video to the WSR Contest per these rules. Attached for (optional) use is a 2013 RMS Photo/Video Contest Model Release for use by a photographer or videographer with easily recognizable individuals to approve unconditional us of all or part of a submitted photo or video file.

You agree that any and all disputes that cannot be resolved with the River Management Society, and causes of action arising out of or connected with this WSR Contest, shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action.  IN ANY SUCH DISPUTE, PARTICIPANT SHALL NOT BE ENTITLED TO ANY PUNITIVE, SPECIAL, INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES, INCLUDING WITHOUT LIMITATION ATTORNEYS' FEES, OR ANY DAMAGES OTHER THAN PARTICIPANT'S ACTUAL OUT-OF-POCKET EXPENSES (IF ANY) ASSOCIATED WITH PARTICIPATING IN THE WSR CONTEST. YOU HEREBY WAIVE ANY RIGHTS TO HAVE DAMAGES MULTIPLIED OR INCREASED. The WSR Contest and the River Management Society’s website are provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, either express or implied.

The River Management Society is not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate information, whether caused by website users or by any equipment or programming associated with or utilized in the photo competition, or by any technical or human error that may occur in the processing of submissions to the photo competition, including but not limited to any misprints or typographical errors. The River Management Society assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operation or transmission, communications line failure, theft or destruction or unauthorized access to, or alteration of, entries. The River Management Society is not responsible for any problems or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer equipment, servers, providers, computer on-line systems, software, or failure of email on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website, including injury or damage to participant's or to any other person's computer related to or resulting from participating or uploading images or information in the photo WSR Contest.

If, for any reason, the photo competition is not capable of completion as planned, including but not limited to, any reason of infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures or any other causes beyond the control of the River Management Society that corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the photo competition, the River Management Society reserves the right at their sole discretion to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the photo competition.
